Coosa River Clash
Gadsden State Cherokee Arena
801 Cedar Bluff Road * Centre, Alabama
Thursday & Friday, December 21 & 22, 2017
Some of Alabama’s better wrestling teams in the northern half of the state will be in Centre starting for the debut of the Coosa River Clash. The tournament is open to the public.
While coaches and teams have been adjusting lineups for dual and tri-matches this week, Southside’s Kyle Routon has been busy working out the logistics for hosting a 25 team tournament.
Southside is the host school for the event, but all of the matches will be held in Gadsden State Cherokee Arena.
The tournament will begin with pool matches Thursday afternoon at 12:30 pm . Then the weight classes will be broken down into two brackets — silver and gold — all of which will count toward team points.
The team with the top three team points will be awarded fish.
That’s right, fish.
“I went a different direction in terms of team trophies for this,” Routon explained. “The first-place trophy is a mounted catfish that’s about 35 inches wide. Second place will be a mounted crappie and third will be a mounted brim.”
Teams expected to wrestle include Class 7A schools Gadsden City, Bob Jones and Sparkman. The 6A schools participating will be Southside, Athens, Clay-Chalkville, Oxford, Pell City, Fort Payne, Muscle Shoals, Columbia, Chelsea and Rome (Georgia).
